Close-up of a restored antique lock and handmade key for a 100-year-old grandfather clock, repaired by Superior Locksmiths

Today we had a gentleman come into the shop with a very unique challenge — a grandfather clock lock repair for a piece over 100 years old. The lock was part of an antique restoration project he had been working on for months. Unfortunately, no original keys had survived with the clock. It had been in his family for generations and carried deep sentimental value, so he wanted it restored as close to its original condition as possible.

At first glance, the lock appeared to be a simple Lever Cupboard Lock, but upon further inspection, we quickly realized this wasn’t just any standard mechanism. The wear on the internals, the inconsistencies in the lever heights, and subtle hand-filed imperfections indicated it was likely handmade itself—possibly by the original clockmaker or a small-scale craftsman of the era. This meant there were no available templates or blanks we could rely on to simply cut a new key.

The job required us to reverse-engineer the lock entirely. We began by carefully disassembling it, cleaning out over a century’s worth of dust and corrosion, and mapping out the lever configuration by hand. It took several attempts and adjustments using traditional locksmithing techniques, including hand-filing and precise depth measurements, to get the key to function smoothly. Modern tools and machines simply weren’t designed for this level of bespoke craftsmanship.

This kind of work isn’t just about cutting a key—it’s about understanding the history and mechanics of antique locking systems. It’s a skillset that has sadly become increasingly rare in today’s locksmithing industry, with many shops focusing solely on modern, mass-produced systems.

In the end, we successfully handmade a fully functional key for the clock, bringing it one step closer to its former glory. The client was overjoyed, and we were proud to play a small but meaningful role in the restoration of a piece of living history. It’s moments like these that highlight the value of working with a true Master Locksmith—someone with the patience, experience, and passion for the craft that goes beyond the ordinary.
